CHARACTER BOARD GRADING:

Our character range of chopping boards are boards that are not quite perfect. This may be visual areas like knots and unusual grain patterns to possible small cracks within the our products.

Due to wood being a natural material sometimes the wood contains these natural defects. While we try to exclude these parts of the timber as much as possible occasionally they can end up in our final boards. Rather than discard them we offer them at a discount rate.

We grade each board individually while listing the defects to the best of our ability, they are then offered at a discount depending on their grade. This will give you a clearer idea on what to expect when purchasing a character board . Each grade is additional to the previous grade.

We try to grade and list defects as accurately as possible. If you are unsure please see the photos or contact us for more information. We would not recommend either grades two through four as gifts.

Our warranty works slightly differently with character boards:

Grade 1 - Standard 1 year warranty

Grade 2 - Limited 1 year warranty (Defects listed on product that go onto cause failure to the board are not covered. )

Grade 3 - Limited 1 year warranty (Defects listed on product that go onto cause failure to the board are not covered. )

Grade 4 - No warranty

GRADE 1 - Visual Defects:

Knots & Unusual grain patterns - Grade one boards are structurally sound boards with the exception of visual defects such as knots and unusual grain patterns. Perfect for some who prefers a board full of character!

GRADE 2 - Filled Defects:

Small filled cracks/areas not near an edge & Small dents or scratches to the surface/edges - Grade two boards have had any minor cracks/small areas filled with food safe resin. These defects are not near an edge making the board structurally sound and unlikely to open up. Some boards may have small dents or scratches from being handled.

GRADE 3 - Surface Defects:

Larger filled/unfilled cracks/areas & Few small unfilled areas - Grade three boards have had any larger cracks/areas filled with food safe resin. These defects are not near an edge making the board structurally sound and unlikely to open up. Some boards may have smaller areas unfilled that were missed during the manufacture of the board.

GRADE 4 - Edge Defects

Filled/Unfilled cracks to edges - Grade four board have edge cracks that have the potential to open up further and may cause structural issues over time.

An end grain chopping boards surface is up to one and a half times harder than a standard "face grain" cutting board alternative. The orientation of the wood means that a knife will slide between the fibres of the wood rather than cutting them; meaning your knives will stay sharper for longer.

Unlike regular face grain chopping boards, regular treatment with our Oil and Wax will cause the board to "self-heal". This will impel the wood fibres to expand and close together around many of the scratches and cuts on the surface; almost bringing back the original surface finish.
