ABOUT THIS BOARD

English Brown Oak - Oak with a deep chocolate-brown colour. Shades can range from light to very dark brown, even within the same tree, making every board different.

Original: A single wood species arranged in a traditional brick pattern using square blocks. The classic Skinner Designs end-grain layout.

Character: Character chopping boards are boards that are not quite perfect. They may contain visual features such as knots and unusual grain patterns, or physical defects such as cracks, filled areas, dents or scratches. Wood is a natural material and these features can occasionally appear in a finished board despite efforts to exclude them. Rather than discard these boards, Skinner Designs grades each one individually, describes its defects as accurately as possible and offers it at a corresponding discount.

Standard - A clean and understated design with straight sides, no handles and rubber feet. Its simple profile keeps attention on the timber, grain and end-grain pattern while providing a stable, raised working surface. A dependable choice for customers who prefer a straightforward and timeless board.

Japanese - A sleek design featuring four tapered sides that create a lighter and more refined profile. The board has no handles and is supported by rubber feet for stability. Because every side is tapered, side engraving is unavailable, although suitable top-surface engraving may still be offered.

CHARACTER BOARD — Grade 3

Grade 3 boards may contain larger filled or unfilled cracks and areas, together with a small number of unfilled areas missed during manufacture. Larger repaired areas use food-safe resin and are not positioned near an edge, making structural failure unlikely.

Warranty limitation: A defect disclosed in the product listing is not covered if that defect subsequently causes the board to fail.

Each board is graded individually and its defects are listed as accurately as possible. Each numbered grade is additional to the previous grade in terms of the types of characteristics that may be present, but only the one selected grade is assigned to the product.

An end grain chopping boards surface is up to one and a half times harder than a standard "face grain" cutting board alternative. The orientation of the wood means that a knife will slide between the fibres of the wood rather than cutting them; meaning your knives will stay sharper for longer.
Unlike regular face grain chopping boards, regular treatment with our Oil and Wax will cause the board to "self-heal". This will impel the wood fibres to expand and close together around many of the scratches and cuts on the surface; almost bringing back the original surface finish.
